Walking

There are lots of VTT which are paths accessed by cyclists, walkers and horse riders.  We have left some guides in the house - and as a general rule we have found the French footpaths to be not signposted as well as English ones, but better used; a map is always useful.

Some walks are well worth doing such as Cap Frehel to Fort Lalatte on the coast.  As well as stunning sea views there is a wealth of bird life to see.

Marked rambling paths

To increase the practice and the development of its activity, the FFRP (French Federation of Rambling) has created its own stadium : in France 60.000 km of paths for the "Grande Randonnée" (long distance paths ; GR and GR de Pays) plus another 80.000 km of itineraries, called "Promenade et Randonnée" (strolling and rambling), i.e. 140.000 km, recognized and maintained by 6.000 voluntary helpers of the Federation.

The common abbreviations are:

GR : marked with a while and red sign ; theses are mainly linear paths (e.g. the GR 34 that runs along the coastal path).

GR de Pays : with the passing years, several loops have been added to the GR, called "GR de Pays" ; to distinguish them, the GR de Pays are marked with a yellow and red sign

PR : the PR (strolling and rambling paths) suggest tours of 1 hour up to 6 hours and cover the entire territory.

The variety of the PR paths meets all tastes and all levels. These itineraries are mostly marked with a yellow stroke.

Topoguides

These concise guides include a detailed map, geographical data, practical guide and cultural information. There is also advice on how to get the best out of rambling (route access, meals, accommodation).

There are two categories of "topoguides" :
Some detail walking/rambling footpaths along circular routes of between 2 and 6 hours walking. Each booklet contains between 20 and 50 routes from family walks to whole day outings for the dedicated hiker.

Others detail long-distance footpaths (GR or GRP on French maps). These routes comprise several days walking either from A to B or tracing a wide circular route.
