Nearest Towns

The nearest towns are:

Matignon -  5 miles.

North of Henanbihen towards St Cast.

A smallish town that hosts a really lively Wednesday market that closes the main streets and sells everything from sea food to African art.

Matignon has a new, large supermarket and numerous shops, restaurants and cafes.

There is a bank that takes an ordinary British cash card and there is also has a tourist office opposite the cafes / fountain.

Our favourite restaurant "La Vielle Auberge" is in Matignon where the patron is friendly and children are welcome.

Lamballe - 15 miles.

Large town with squares, cafes, shops, parks, swimming pool and large supermarkets.

Home of the National Stud which is an interesting visit to see the traditional Breton "cart" horses - Cheval Breton.

Dinan - 15 miles.

Situated in an outstanding location overlooking the valley of the river Rance, the fortified town of Dinan is indisputably one of the most beautiful places in Brittany.

Still completely encircled by its historic ramparts, the town possesses a unique architectural heritage successfully preserved down through the centuries. Its belfry, churches, convents, half-timbered houses and narrow streets are really worth a visit.

St Malo - 30 miles.

Built in granite rock in the English Channel, the resort of Saint Malo is known for its castle, the cathedral of Saint Vincent, its 14th century ramparts which overlook the sea and as the birthplace of the famous French writer and statesman, Chateaubriand.

This is a view of St Malo.

The town has a somewhat dubious history having been an important base for pirates and also for the slave trade. Nevertheless, a trip to St Malo is a must for any visitor to Brittany. The settlement, whose name derives from a 6th century British Monk who came to convert the region to Christianity, is a thriving channel port town containing several docks covering commercial, pleasure and ferry traffic.

The "intra muros" are a rabbit warren of streets and alley-ways full of shops, hotels, restaurants and bars that are a must see for any visitor.  Try and take some time to visit rather than just drive through on your way into and away from Brittany.

There are also many boat trips from St Malo to the Channel Islands which, although under British jurisdiction, are much closer to France than England.
